Chicken and bean sprout is one of Ipoh specialities. Some might say if you visit Ipoh, but not yet try its chicken and bean sprout, it likes you never visit the city. For chicken and bean sprout, the most famous ones you can find it at Yau Tet Shin street.
There are two restaurants next to each others serving the chicken and bean sprout, Lou Wong restaurant and Onn Kee restaurant. There is also one restaurant with almost similar name, Ong Kee restaurant. From taxi driver, I heard that the Ong Kee which is located across the Lou Wong restaurant is having brotherhood with Onn Kee restaurant but I am not sure on this. Both of Lou Wong and Ong Kee claim the best one for this local specialities. Which one is the best ? We will find it out soon.
The first restaurant I visited was Lou Wong restaurant. It ‘s non air conditioned restaurant with some of the tables are put on the street side. Here I order the chicken and bean sprout. For accompanying the chicken, you have the option either rice of Kwetiauw (rice noodle) soup. I suggest you to have the Kwetiauw soup same as mine. They will also serve you chilli padi if you like spicy.
It’s very suprising for me especially when I try the Kwetiauw soup. The taste is so wonderful, very tasteful much more and exceeded my expectation. There are no meat serving inside the soup. I wonder how they cook this wonderful soup broth. Here I spend about 10.5 MYR.

On my last night at Ipoh, I try the Ong Kee restaurant. I order the exact same food as I order the one in Lou Wong restaurant. The good thing here is it’s air conditioned. The food serve fast however for the payment, it’s a bit slow waiting for the staff especially if you seat on the air conditioned shop house where most of the staffs are located in the first shop house.
The food in Ong Kee restaurant taste good, but the Kwetiauw soup does not taste as good as the one at Lou Wong restaurant. I think the chicken portion at Lou Wong is a bit bigger compared to Onn Kee. Here i pay less, 10 MYR but not much different compared to Lou Wong.

Overall I prefer Lou Wong for Ipoh chicken and bean sprout culinary. However if you prefer air conditioned restaurant with good taste as well, you can choose Onn Kee restaurant.
When you visited here, you will need to visit the fruit stores next to Onn Kee, Chop Wong Yew Kee. The shop is selling many local specialities with many tasty biscuits, local specialities cake made by them like the black sesame biscuit I bought from this store.
